«Nichts behält seine Gestalt; die Natur, Verwandlerin der Dinge, schafft stets aus alten Formen neue», schrieb der Dichter Ovid in seinen Metamorphosen. Martin Leuthold hat die Verwandlungskunst zu seinem Schaffensprinzip gemacht. Die Welt der Bilder ist ihm Archiv und Inspiration: Kunstpostkarten, Pressefotografie, Architektur, Natur und Alltagsgegenstände liefern Ideen für das Textildesign, aus Textilien entstehen Kollektionen, aus Kollektionen Kostüme und Ausstellungen. Martin Leuthold schafft Verbindungen, wo vorher keine waren. Er interpretiert Altes neu, macht aus Vergangenem Zukunft, kombiniert irritierende Formen zu filigraner Schönheit.

Nach einer Lehre zum Stickerei-Entwerfer ist er 1973 ins Textilunternehmen Jakob Schlaepfer eingetreten. Von 1989 bis 2018 war er bei Schlaepfer Kreativdirektor und Mitglied der Geschäftsleitung und entwarf mit seinem Team jährlich über 1000 Stoffe für die Welt der Moden. Für sein Schaffen erhielt er zahlreiche Preise, darunter den Schweizer Grand Prix Design vom Bundesamt für Kultur. Heute arbeitet er in seinem Privatatelier.

“Nothing retains the form that seems its own, and Nature, the renewer of all things, continually changes every form into some other shape,” wrote Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The principle of metamorphosis is at the centre of Martin Leuthold’s work. Pictures of all types serve as his archive and inspiration – art postcards, press photos, architecture, nature and everyday objects are the fuel for his fabric design ideas, for ideas that grow into collections, collections that become outfits and exhibitions. Martin Leuthold creates connections where none existed before. He reinterprets everything, turns past into future, combines confusing forms into works of intricate beauty.

Following his apprenticeship as an embroidery designer, he joined the textile company Jakob Schlaepfer in 1973. From 1989 to 2018, he was Creative Director and a member of the management board at Schlaepfer, where he and his team designed over 1,000 fabrics for the fashion world every year. He was awarded countless prizes for his work, including the Swiss Grand Prix of Design from the Federal Office of Culture. Today, he works in his private atelier.
